On July 2, IEC invited Professor Helen Kelly-Holmes, Chair of Applied Linguistics at the University of Limerick, Ireland, to give an online presentation titled "Multilingual Artificial Intelligence from Researcher and User Perspectives: Report on the MultiLX Project." The lecture was hosted by the International Exchange College and presided over by Dean LIU Yuying.
Professor Kelly-Holmes is Honorary Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Sociolinguistics, World Englishes, Language Policy, and Co-Principal Investigator of MultiLX, a project funded by the EU's Horizon Europe programme. Since 2002, she has co-edited Palgrave's long-running book series on Language and Globalization with Sue Wright. Drawing on the EU-funded MultiLX project, she examined the impact of AI on language learning and identity formation among young multilingual speakers in Europe, adopting both researcher and user perspectives.
The lecture proved highly instructive, broadening the professional horizons of the faculty in International Chinese Education. Against the accelerating digital and intelligent transformation of education, it offered valuable insights into how International Chinese Education can harness digital-intelligent tools to open new channels for the dissemination of the Chinese language, cross-cultural mutual learning, and international cooperation—and thereby elevate the overall quality of the field.
